Advice Guru Bid

I saw the initial announcement on Good Morning America on September 20th when they announced it on the morning news. I immediately sat down and answered the questions and wrote my essay. But I'm a stickler for details, especially when I know I'm going to be compared to 10,000 other people.

So as soon as I wrote the initial rough draft I sent it to my cousin, June, for proof reading. As my educational hero, I trust her implicitly to be completely critical of anything I write, and to help me improve it. After sending it back and forth for three days making multiple corrections, I heard George and Robin discussing it again. They had already received more than 3,000 entries. I hurried and did a new picture to send in, made the final changes to my answer and my essay, and pressed send.

As anybody that knows me can tell you, patience is not one of my finest attributes. On the contrary, I'm so impatient that I knew the genders of all of my children by my fourth month of pregnancy. No patience whatsoever.

Everyday over the next two weeks. I would watch GMA and check their sites for any updates. I read over all of the entries GMA posted, I checked people that announced that they were in the running on Twitter and Facebook. I OBSESSED. That's what I do, I want to know what's going on whenever possible.

After two weeks of reading some of the best, and some of the worst, entries I'd ever seen, I submitted a second entry. It didn't say we couldn't in the guidelines, so I did it. I figured there were a limited number of things they could do with it. Either they would dismiss it as a duplicate entry, they would use it instead of my original entry, or they would look at the two together and decide which one was better. Another option might have been that they threw out both, but I was hoping that since it wasn't specified that only one entry could be submitted that wasn't a possibility.

Then I waited. I daydreamed about what it would be like and how things would change. I ranted with my friend Karen endlessly, probably to her boredom, about all of the “what ifs” mulling it all over. I created a Twitter page, a Facebook page, and this blog so I was easy to locate if they decided to look into what skills I have.

Last Friday was the last day that entries could be submitted, so now I'm waiting to see if I'm one of the lucky few to get a phone call. If I do, then you, dear reader, will have a lot more to read about it. (warm smiles) =D

Friday, October 29, 2010  **UPDATE**

Earlier this week our dearest George and Robin announced the station had been overwhelmed with submissions, more than 15,000.  The original intent was to have been calling finalists last week, but with the abundance of entries they were still trying to whittle the applications down to a thousand.  Down to one thousand, wow, the poor folks at ABC clearly had their work cut out for them!

This was good news for applicants such as myself.  It meant that the silent telephones we hovered near all week didn't mean we had been rejected, at least not yet.  Our excitment or disappointment had been postponed for two or three weeks.  So maybe, just maybe, they're reading this.  Maybe they're looking up the people they are interested in, looking to see what kind of writers they are.  So this is me, tipping my hat to them.

Sunday, November 14, 2010  **UPDATE**

So the fine folks at Good Morning America have been busy little bunnies!  Friday they gave an update on their show. They've moved on to the second stage of their decision making, calling finalists. Not the Final Ten yet, but the last 40 or 50 people. Some candidates have already been called, but according to Bianna Golodryga several more will be called over the next few weeks.  I did a whole write up on it in my regular blog space.  Click here to read it.

I would be lying if I didn't say I was disappointed not have heard anything out of them, but I realize after looking around that the competition is pretty stiff.  All of the PhD's aside, there's a woman that went from being a hairdresser to a court justice!  How amazing is that?

I've found across the internet more than 50 people that have submitted entries for the advice guru position.  They're quirky, funny, intelligent, spiritual, entertaining, and even helpful.  And then there are the exceptional ones!  OK, ok, seriously, most of the candidates I found were exceptional.  I don't envy that table full of people that had to carve that pile of entries down.

But hey, they did say they're still calling people.  Maybe I'll keep the phone handy just a little bit longer...  ;-)

OH!  And it might not hurt for some of you that follow me to toss me a bone or two.  Let me know what you think, I'm a big girl, be straight with me.  Use the comment section, that's what it's there for.  =D
